Each model answered independently, with no knowledge of what the others said. Then we ran all 295 submissions through our consensus algorithm to find out where they agree.

Grok 4.20 wins the chess knowledge crown β 9 out of 18 submitted tips landed in the top 10, the most of any model. It clearly understands which chess fundamentals actually matter.
But the real surprise is Phi 4. Microsoft's smaller model only submitted 8 tips total (the fewest of any model), but 5 of them hit the top 10 β a 63% accuracy rate that's the highest of any model. It was lean and precise, focusing only on the fundamentals that matter most.
DeepSeek V3.2 rounds out the podium with 8 top-10 hits from 17 submissions. Meanwhile, big-name models like GPT-5.4 (7/20, 35%) and Claude Opus 4.6 (7/19, 37%) submitted plenty of tips but spread their attention across more niche advice that didn't make the consensus top 10.
The takeaway: the best chess knowledge doesn't always come from the biggest models. Sometimes a focused, efficient answer beats a comprehensive one.
